“From my earliest memories, I knew I was an artist.” – Julie Siracusa
Siracusa can remember back to two and a half years old when she began drawing. She had her first formal painting lessons when she was just five. The pull towards creative pursuits has continued throughout her life. Attending college at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette brought the study of Architecture and Fine Art, which has given Siracusa a deep historical knowledge of the arts. Learning what came before us makes for a solid foundation to explore truly original art forms.
Working with many mediums through the course of her career, Siracusa has developed diverse skills in the art making process. She worked as an art director for a billboard company early on. Her time in this role was before photographic billboard production was available. Siracusa mastered posterization where she would interpret any image into areas of Pantone colors that could be silk screened or painted. During this time, she curated an art gallery with an all-volunteer artist staff. Every Saturday, Siracusa would participate on morning talk radio for a theater-of-the-mind experience. A featured artist from the gallery would join her to share artistic views with the local community.
Siracusa founded a graphic design company that has been highly successful since its inception. She has worked in all mediums in the media branding businesses. Her work has appeared globally. All the while, she carved out time for her fine art. Painting and sculpting have been dominate in her work. Siracusa admits that she got caught up in perfecting realism longer than necessary. She believed that any artist that wants to abstract a subject must be an excellent draftsman before being justified to take that path. Now, she has a renewed view. Realism or abstract, pursue your passion now!
Currently, Siracusa is truly pursuing her passion: Water. She began painting images of reflections on the water’s surface. Soon after immersing in her love of water, she realized that she needed a greater depth for her imagery. This is when she went below the surface and took the camera with her under water. This realization happened after the weather cooled the water in her pool. Siracusa headed to her local dive shop to rent a full wet suit to take the plunge into the chilly water. Even with a sixteen-pound weight belt she bobbed like a cork having great difficulty getting below the surface. None of the photos from the first shoot gave her the content she was hoping for. The following spring and into summer she experimented with shoot after shoot until she found techniques that captured the drama in movement and the contrast she desired.
Since then, Siracusa has created her fluid, original branded style. She has taken underwater photos that inspire her paintings and sculpture in many locations. These include the open waters of Jamaica’s south coast, the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, Palm Springs, CA and Key West, FL.
Siracusa’s artistic voice speaks of the life-giving force of water. Her work has a healing and calming effect on the viewer.
